The geared Hispano Suiza gave much problems and was in short supply, Wolseley

developed a not-geared engine as replacement based on the Hispano Suiza 8A. With

this engine the SE5a finally gave the excellent performance needed. SE5a’s with Viper -

engines became operational in the spring of 1918
